Affiliates Update Fall 2004

The DTC provides its Affiliate Members with quarterly “members only” updates on the activities of the DTC and its researchers. The following update was made available to members in Fall 2004. For more information about the DTC Affiliates Program and other partnership opportunities please go to http://www.dtc.umn.edu/industrial.shtml.

Welcome from the director

DTC Director, Andrew Odlyzko

DTC Director
Andrew Odlyzko

At the Digital Technology Center (DTC), we value our partnerships, and we want to add value to our partners. As a result, we are adding content to the DTC affiliate-only web page that we hope you will find useful and interesting. You also will continue to receive the DTC Bulletin, which we circulate to friends and associates.

I’d like to share some recent highlights:

  • Affiliate members grow
The list of DTC Affiliates continues to grow. Current members include ADC; Benjamin Moore & Co.; EMC; IBM; Intel; Engenio Information Technologies, Inc.; 3M; Nortel Networks; StorageTek; Sun Microsystems; Thomson Corporation; Unisys; and Veritas.

If you know of companies that may be interested in the work of the DTC, please let us know.
  • Digital Design Consortium forms
DTC consortiums offer industry opportunities to more fully collaborate with cutting-edge researchers from diverse disciplines who come together to advance an important area.

Consortium membership includes the ability to develop close working relationships with faculty and to participate in a residency program for onsite collaborations. It also offers companies access to DTC laboratories and certain patent and license rights. Any affiliate may choose to join a consortium under a separate agreement.

The DTC launched its second consortium. The Digital Design Consortium (DDC) focuses on developing tools that allow professionals in the design and building industry to experience design in a virtual reality design environment and to advance color graphics and visualization work.

The DDC joins the DTC Intelligent Storage Consortium, where consortium members explore business and technology issues that relate to making storage devices, subsystems, and applications more intelligent.

  • Security issues explored
The DTC co-sponsored the Third Annual Workshop on Economics and Information Security May 13-14. What are the issues that impact the development of a more secure information technology environment? How safe is our current environment?

The article “How secure is secure?” examines those questions in more depth.
  • Affiliates-only web page includes additional features
We are adding additional information to our affiliates-only web page. Here’s what’s new:

We plan to send you brief quarterly updates, and we look forward to your feedback about these updates and other issues. As always, please feel free to contact me with ideas, questions, or concerns. I look forward to seeing you at our Open House or at another DTC event.
