Ted Johnson and colleagues visit the DDC
May 11, 2006
On May 11, Ted Johnson and his colleagues W. Robert (“Bob”) King and
Peter Mullen visited the Digital Technology Center’s Digital Design
Consortium for an update on the DDC’s research activities. The goal of
DDC, which was established through a gift from Linda and Ted Johnson,
is to exploit emerging digital technologies and to develop computer
based design techniques that are appropriate at distinct points in the
design of a new building. During the visit, the DDC faculty (Lee
Anderson, Victoria Interrante, and Gary Meyer), Vipin Kumar (Computer
Science and Engineering Head), and Andrew Odlyzko (DTC Director)
presented Ted Johnson with a visualization of Minneapolis’ Stone Arch
Bridge.
This visualization, which was created by DDC faculty member Baoquan
Chen and his research group, is a computer rendering of the Stone Arch
bridge and the Mill City Ruins at Minneapolis from point clouds
generated by registering six scans of the scene, obtained by a Riegl
LMS-Z360 3D Imaging Sensor. The painterly style is achieved by
automatically extracting feature structures in the scene (point clouds)
and simulating a multi-pass painterly drawing process. The scene can be
interactively navigated with this and other artistic styles on a
regular PC.

Pictured are (from the left) D’nardo Colucci (DDC Lab Manager), Adrew
Odlyzko (DTC Director), Gary Meyer (CSE), Ted Johnson, Lee Anderson
(Architecture), Vipin Kumar (CSE Head), and Victoria Interrante (CSE).
